World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly

In the MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS FOR THE THIRD WORLD DAY FOR GRANDPARENTS AND THE ELDERLY Pope Francis states:

“His mercy is from age to age” (Lk 1:50). This is the theme of the Third World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, and it takes us back to the joyful meeting between the young Mary and her elderly relative Elizabeth (cf. Lk 1:39-56). Filled with the Holy Spirit, Elizabeth addressed the Mother of God with words that, millennia later, continue to echo in our daily prayer: “Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb” (v. 42). The Holy Spirit, who had earlier descended upon Mary, prompted her to respond with the Magnificat, in which she proclaimed that the Lord’s mercy is from generation to generation. That same Spirit blesses and accompanies every fruitful encounter between different generations: between grandparents and grandchildren, between young and old. God wants young people to bring joy to the hearts of the elderly, as Mary did to Elizabeth, and gain wisdom from their experiences. Yet, above all, the Lord wants us not to abandon the elderly or to push them to the margins of life, as tragically happens all too often in our time.

This year, the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly takes place close to World Youth Day. Both celebrations remind us of the “haste” (cf. v. 39) with which Mary set out to visit Elizabeth. In this way, they invite us to reflect on the bond that unites young and old. The Lord trusts that young people, through their relationships with the elderly, will realize that they are called to cultivate memory and recognize the beauty of being part of a much larger history. Friendship with an older person can help the young to see life not only in terms of the present and realize that not everything depends on them and their abilities. For the elderly, the presence of a young person in their lives can give them hope that their experience will not be lost and that their dreams can find fulfilment. Mary’s visit to Elizabeth and their shared awareness that the Lord’s mercy is from generation to generation remind us that, alone, we cannot move forward, much less save ourselves, and that God’s presence and activity are always part of something greater, the history of a people. Mary herself said this in the Magnificat, as she rejoiced in God, who, in fidelity to the promise he had made to Abraham, had worked new and unexpected wonders (cf. vv. 51-55) more…

En el MENSAJE DE SU SANTIDAD EL PAPA FRANCISCO PARA LA TERCERA JORNADA MUNDIAL DE LOS ABUELOS Y LAS PERSONAS MAYORES el Papa Francisco afirma:

«Su misericordia se extiende de generación en generación» (Lc 1,50): este es el tema de la III Jornada Mundial de los Abuelos y de los Mayores. Es un tema que nos reconduce a aquel encuentro bendito entre la joven María y su pariente anciana Isabel (cf. Lc 1,39-56). Esta, llena del Espíritu Santo, se dirige a la Madre de Dios con palabras que, a distancia de milenios, acompasan nuestra oración cotidiana: «Bendita tú eres entre todas las mujeres, y bendito es el fruto de tu vientre» (v. 42). Y el Espíritu Santo, que ha descendido ya sobre María, la impulsa a responder con el Magníficat, en el que proclama que la misericordia del Señor se extiende de generación en generación. El Espíritu Santo bendice y acompaña cada encuentro fecundo entre generaciones distintas, entre abuelos y nietos, entre jóvenes y ancianos. Efectivamente, Dios desea que, como hizo María con Isabel, los jóvenes alegren el corazón de los ancianos, y que adquieran sabiduría de sus vivencias. Pero, sobre todo, el Señor desea que no dejemos solos a los ancianos, que no los releguemos a los márgenes de la vida, como por desgracia sucede frecuentemente.

Es hermosa, este año, la cercanía entre la celebración de la Jornada Mundial de los Abuelos y de los Mayores y la de la Juventud; ambas tienen como tema la “prisa” de María para ir a visitar a Isabel (cf. v. 39), y de ese modo nos llevan a reflexionar sobre el vínculo entre los jóvenes y los ancianos. El Señor espera que los jóvenes, al encontrarse con los ancianos, acojan la llamada a custodiar la memoria y reconozcan, gracias a ellos, el don de pertenecer a una historia más grande. La amistad con una persona anciana ayuda al joven a no reducir la vida al presente y a recordar que no todo depende de sus capacidades. Para los más ancianos, en cambio, la presencia de un joven les da esperanza de que todo lo que han vivido no se perderá y que sus sueños pueden realizarse. En definitiva, la visita de María a Isabel y la conciencia de que la misericordia del Señor se transmite de una generación a la otra revelan que no podemos avanzar —y mucho menos salvarnos— solos y que la intervención de Dios se manifiesta siempre en el conjunto, en la historia de un pueblo. Es María misma quien lo dice en el Magníficat, exultando en Dios que ha obrado maravillas nuevas y sorprendentes, fiel a la promesa hecha a Abrahán (cf. vv. 51-55).
